Performance review methods: 360 and 9-box
Impressions like “works well” or “not very productive” aren’t enough to evaluate an employee. Systematic performance review puts impression into a measurable frame.
Performance review is measuring employees’ work results and competencies against a defined frame. The goal is to see objectively who is strong where and who needs support in what, and to guide development. A good review also puts promotion and pay decisions on a fair basis.
360-degree feedback
360-degree review is a method where an employee is evaluated not only by their manager but also by peers, subordinates and sometimes customers. It balances the bias of a single viewpoint and gives a more holistic picture. Multi-source feedback is especially valuable for competencies like collaboration and communication.
9-box talent matrix
9-box is a matrix positioning employees on two axes: current performance and future potential. The nine boxes map from “high performance-high potential” (stars) to “low performance-low potential.” This visual is a powerful tool for talent management and succession planning.
Goal-based evaluation
Alongside competencies, concrete goals should be measured too. The rate of reaching goals defined at the start of a period is the most objective indicator of performance. In the performance module, goals, competencies and 360 feedback are gathered in one place; results are summarized with visuals like 9-box.
Whichever method you choose, the principle is the same: take evaluation out of impression and base it on data and a defined frame. This is both fair for the employee and a guide for the business.
